June 25th marks World Vitiligo Day, an opportunity to raise awareness about this chronic skin condition. Vitiligo can have a significant impact on self-esteem and self-confidence. In this article, we will explore vitiligo and share makeup tips to help camouflage depigmented areas.
______________
What is vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a skin condition characterized by the loss of pigmentation, leading to the appearance of white or depigmented patches on different parts of the body. This condition is caused by the destruction of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment.
Vitiligo can affect anyone, regardless of age, sex, or ethnic origin, but it is more common in people with a family history of the disease.
The exact causes of vitiligo are not yet fully understood, but it is thought to be of autoimmune, genetic, or environmental origin. Potential triggers include emotional stress, skin trauma, infections, and chemical imbalances in the body.
Although vitiligo does not pose any risks to physical health, it can have a significant psychological impact due to its aesthetic appearance. People with vitiligo may experience difficulties related to self-esteem, self-confidence, and acceptance of their appearance.
There is no cure for vitiligo, but various therapeutic options are available. These aim to control the progression of the disease and improve the appearance of the skin. These treatments include topical corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, phototherapy, and melanocyte transplantation.
It is also essential to raise public awareness of vitiligo, promote acceptance, and support people affected by this condition.
Makeup can be used as a camouflage technique to reduce the appearance of depigmented spots, but it is just as important to promote self-esteem and self-acceptance, thereby encouraging confidence and valuing diversity.
Our tips for applying makeup even with vitiligo
Skin preparation
Before applying makeup, it is essential to prepare the skin appropriately.
Cleanse your face with a mild face cleanser to remove impurities and apply a light moisturizer for a smooth base.
Opt for hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic products suitable for sensitive skin.
Correcting your complexion
The complexion is the most complex part when trying to correct it and when suffering from vitiligo.
Finding the right shade of foundation can be a challenge. Rather than trying to hide the skin condition, it is recommended to choose an intermediate shade that does not gray the pigmented areas of the face and does not over-emphasize the depigmented areas.
It is also advisable to start with two shades of foundation to soften the contours of vitiligo. A concealer can also be used to blend the edges of vitiligo patches and reduce contrast.
If you want to camouflage and foundation is not enough, you can apply a green corrector. This will neutralize the red and yellow tones of the foundation. Don't forget to powder your complexion because products may not last as long on depigmented areas.
Opt for color
Blush will be your best friend to bring freshness and a healthy glow to your complexion. However, you still need to adapt the color to your skin tone.
If your cheekbones are depigmented, we advise against flashy colors. Indeed, these may be a little too vibrant.
Confidence and self-acceptance
In addition to makeup tips, it is essential to cultivate self-confidence and self-acceptance when living with vitiligo.
Remember that beauty lies in diversity. Vitiligo does not define who you are. Cultivate self-confidence and love yourself as you are.
