As the CAP Hairdressing exams approach, our dear students are beginning to prepare to take the tests to obtain their state diploma. How does one obtain the qualification? What are the tests? We will answer your questions in this article.
______________
How are your CAP Hairdressing exams structured?
In April, you should receive your invitations to the CAP Hairdressing exam to take it at an examination center.
There are 6 compulsory tests:
- 3 professional tests
- 3 general tests
While in most cases all these tests take place in the same establishment, you may experience some changes. We advise you to take the time to figure out how to get to the given location before D-Day, and in advance! Lateness will not be tolerated.
As the exams fall in May, you will need, if you haven't already, to get materials and documents for the exam.

What are the tests?
As we mentioned earlier, the 6 tests are divided into 2 categories: professional tests and general tests. The different subjects are as follows:
1 Men's Cut and Style
- 1h – Men's Cut and Style (practical) – Coefficient 3
- 1h – Prevention, Health, and Environment (written) Coefficient
2 Cut, Shape, and Color
- 2h30 – Cut, Shape, and Color (practical) – Coefficient 6
- 2h30 – Applied Sciences and Arts (written) – Coefficient 4
3 Oral Communication
- 15 minutes – Communication (oral) – Coefficient 2
4 French, History, and Geography – Coefficient 3

5 Mathematics and Science
- 2h – Mathematics and Science (written) – Coefficient 2
6 Physical and Sports Education
- Physical Education (practical) – Coefficient 1
Note that if you practice a foreign language, you can take the optional language test. This will allow you to earn more points if you get a good score. Indeed, only points above the average will be counted.
It's always good to remember that being absent from an exam is eliminatory .
Finally, to obtain your CAP Hairdressing, you will need to achieve an average of 10/20 for each of the exams.

How to revise well as final exams approach?
Exams mean revisions! This is often the key to successfully obtaining your diploma. However, having good organization during revisions can be absolutely essential when trying to optimize your time and studies.
1. Prepare to revise in good conditions
First of all, we can only advise you to prepare a revision schedule based on your curriculum and its syllabus . Don't hesitate to consult other people in the same class as you to express your concerns and help answer your questions.
2. Writing and viewing, two great keys to learning
There are several ways to memorize things. Some revision methods will be more accessible to you. Writing notes by hand can be an excellent way to memorize and synthesize your knowledge and curriculum in your mind. Watching videos can also help you retain information.
3. Regularly practice hairdressing techniques
Practice makes perfect! Be careful, regularity does not necessarily mean you should style someone or your mannequin head every day until your final exams. However, doing this regularly while trying different hairdressing techniques on both men and women will allow you to approach the exam much more calmly.
What you'll need for the CAP Hairdressing exam
First and foremost, it goes without saying that you will need certain documents to prove your identity and justify your presence, as for all exams. These are simply:
- An identity document
- Your exam invitation
In addition, you will need all your professional hairdressing equipment, your linens, and appropriate attire. The purchase of equipment is your responsibility.
Keep in mind that lending equipment between candidates is strictly prohibited. Make sure you have everything you need in your case, especially a new oxidant and professional hair color .
On your way to passing your CAP Hairdressing exam
The day before or the morning of your exam, don't bother revising. It's never a good idea to do that. You'll only sow doubt in your mind and risk mixing everything up. Go in calmly and positively! It's important to believe in your abilities. If you've worked hard, you have every chance of succeeding.
Don't hesitate to contact your models to ensure everything is fine and to remind them of important information. You are very likely soon to be a hairdresser, so don't hesitate to adopt the attitude to fully play your role.
Results of the CAP Hairdressing professional qualification
You have finished your exam. Now, are you stressing and waiting for the results? These will be published in July, and the diplomas will be available at the end of September or during October.
