How do I know if my hair is fine or thick?

Not sure exactly what hair type you have? There are different ways to find out the nature of your hair, whether it's fine, thick, or normal. Discover them in this article!

______________

Fine Hair

Fine hair is fragile. It is more prone to breakage and also gets greasy more quickly. A lack of volume can also make it difficult for women to hold certain hairstyles, such as buns. It can be fine and dry if you have some deficiencies; we advise you to seek professional advice.

This texture often has a density of about 80,000 hairs on the head. We don't advise you to count them to see if this is your case. However, to find out if you have fine hair, we offer two methods further down in this article.

Thick Hair

Thick hair, on the other hand, has a density of about 150,000 hairs on your head. While it doesn't break as easily as fine hair, it takes longer to dry, can become dry, and can be difficult to style. Heat from styling tools is well-tolerated by thick hair, as are chemical treatments like coloring, for example.

To find out if you have thick hair, we also recommend the two methods available below.

Normal Hair

Normal hair is the happy medium between the two hair types we mentioned earlier. This is the most common texture. You shouldn't have too much trouble styling it, and the hair is relatively strong, easily withstanding the heat from flat irons, curling irons, or the damage from hair coloring.

How to determine my hair thickness?

We invite you to try the following two methods, well-known for their accurate results.

First method:

  1. Find a regular sewing thread and cut a good length of it.
  2. Once that's done, pluck one of your hairs from the crown of your head.
  3. Now we can compare them by placing them side by side.
  4. If your hair is thinner than the sewing thread, you have fine hair!

Second method:

Using the same hair you just plucked, slide it between your thumb and forefinger to feel its weight. If you can't feel your hair between your fingers, it's very likely that you have fine hair.

Of course, by going to a hair salon, you can sort out the truth from the false, with opinions and details if your hair is dry, what treatments or what shampoo to use. Moreover, if you have curls, the hairdresser can advise you on a brush suitable for your curls and lengths, along with a shampoo and the specifics of your routine.

Our solutions for fine hair

Have you realized that your hair is fine? Remember that it's possible to gain thickness without changing everything. We advise you to treat your hair with great gentleness.

Furthermore, using hairstyles and treatments that are too heavy risks damaging your hair. Various butters should therefore be avoided.

Do you have fine (perhaps dry) hair and hope to change things to get stronger, more voluminous hair? There's also a treatment or shampoo that will help you improve your shine.
