A brief history of St. Patrick's Day…
To start, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated every March 17th on the Emerald Isle. Originally a religious holiday, it has gradually become a national holiday, with a public holiday since 1903.
Why March 17th, you ask? Simply because the date corresponds to the day of the death of Ireland's patron saint, Patrick.
Over the centuries, St. Patrick's Day has become a celebration of Irish culture, featuring traditional dances, Irish dishes, Celtic music, and green attire. Irish cities have organized St. Patrick's Day parades since the early 17th century, but the first St. Patrick's Day parade took place in the United States in 1762, in New York.
On St. Patrick's Day, Irish people around the world (especially in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, where there are large populations of Irish descent) are happy to honor it through parades, songs, dances, and laughter. Legend has it that to explain the Trinity to his people, the patron saint used a shamrock.
Thus, this small green plant, with its color and original shape, became the symbol of an entire country. A strong symbol, also found in Irish-inspired makeup.
It is indeed one of the oldest and most famous holidays in Ireland!
